I really like how we have a "Wednesday Grace Period". As it is, my wednesdays start off early, and end with a lab. Usually with lab days, all I want to do after is take a nap. This Grace Period will allow me to still write my blog post if those "naps" turn into me sleeping into the night.

I went ahead and added my own flavor to my blog. I stuck to keeping the "Simple" template, and changed the contents within it. I decided to change the background to a personal image of a picture I had my sister take of me on top of the beautiful mountains of California. One of my favorite colors is marroon; I chose to add alittle bit of color, and make my text in marroon. I also decided to change the layout just a tad bit, and hopefully when I find time to added to my "about me" column it all comes together. It is really easy to flow through the different tabs of changing your blog. I also found it helpful that you could see the changes as you did them.

Hope my Blog insprires others to change it up a bit, and put a personal flare to their blogs as well.

Growth Mindset

Growth Mindset

I have learned about the "Growth Mindset", actually very recently. My Introduction to Biochemistry teacher taught our class about it. He didn’t necessarily show us the TED Talks video, but described the main idea of the thought. After learning about it, I found myself to be 50-50 with having the “Growth” and “Fixed” mindset. I realized that with subjects or topics I was interested in, I would have more of a “growth” approach to it; while if I didn’t have any interest in the field, I would have a “fixed” mindset. I have learned that having this growth mindset for my passion and my interests, has helped a lot through out college. I love chemistry, and with this “growth” mindset, I tend to do more practice problems, ask questions, or try to understand why I got something wrong to avoid the problem again.
I chose this meme because it describes exactly how I feel about learning new topics in Chemistry. Photo Credits : Larry Ferlazzo

I don’t get discouraged if I don’t get the best grade on the exam, or even an A in the class. Since it has helped me a lot, I think I will try to apply it to classes I’m not so excited for, such as Quantative Analysis. This class is part of my major, and is one of the more difficult courses. I am worried I might be able to grasp the material in enough time, or not do great in my labs. Therefor, I am definitely interested in learning more about the Growth Mindset, and using it towards this class that I am worried about.

Starting the Semester

Starting the Semester

I found a few of the tips given by Laura very helpful, and convient. After reading the list, I turned on my spell & grammer check for Safari. This is faster then typing what I want to write on Word, and then transfering it onto my blog. I also added a bookmark tab of the class assignments to my top sites for easy access. With all the assignments and due dates listed, my personal calender was easy to fill out.

This is not exactly my planner, but it is an image of one that looks pretty similar. I like to write everything down in different colors and categories, and when I complete a talk I mark it out with a "X" mark. Photo Credits : Overstuffed Life

Reading Options

Reading Options

I decided to choose the first reading option of the Ramayana. I decided to choose this version because it was written with modern terminology. I have difficulty understanding historical text all the time, so I assume reading the modern version first would be helpful. Also I like to read books in text form, I hate when I have to read off the screen. ( I know that this class requires a lot of screen reading, but I do not mind instructions as much.) I looked throught the Reading Guidelines for both the reading options. I like how it was split up between four sections and each section had subtitles with the story titles listed. I like how there is a brief summary of each story within the reading groups. The story I am most excited to read about is the story of "Rama tests Sita". I read from earlier, in one of the storybooks. a short version of this tale.

In the past semester I took a class called "World Religion". The class was not what I expected. We only talked about one religeon and it happened to be Christianity. Although I did not have a good experience,  I am willing to try again with a form of religious class.

I myself, am Indian and am very cultured. I love listening to Indian music, and watching Indian movies. I have not lived in India for any part of my life, but I have visited about twice. I went both times during the summer, and stayed about two and half months both rounds. I love visiting India, and I hope to go back soon!

Storybook Favorites

Storybook Favorites

The first storybook that caught my eye was “Even Fairytales End”. I love this title because it is something that isn’t popularized. I am tired of hearing the same story happily ever after story over and over again. The author of the book did a great job with describing the title. The introduction was inching at me to read the whole book. Leaving with a form of a cliff hanger really grabbed my attention There were images for each section of the book, but no caption… The over all layout was simple and sweet. It was easy to navigate and flowed from beginning to end. I would definitely think about using side bars, as this story book included with the chapter titles, in my storybook.

Project Runway: Indian Epics Edition”, killed the storybook project. It had a great mix with modern and old. The introduction fully explained what the rest of the storybook would flow like, and showcase. The addition of where the stories would come from was very clever. I found that their chosen requirements for the final challenge were very appropriate. The top bar layout makes the story book look clean cut, and very organized; which made it very easy to navigate between each subtopic.

This picture is one of the outfits from the Storybook above. (Project Runway) I love wearing Indian dresses, and this one was one of my favorites from the Story book. Picture Credit: Project Runway : Epics India Edition

The story of “Kurma and Karma” was a great pairing of an old Indian tale and Finding Nemo. The title and Introduction went hand in hand. Once again, the sidebar with all the subtitles was a great addition to the story book. I was however a little confused as to why there was a separate title named “A Tale of Two Turtles” with only an image of one turtle and no description. I assumed that was the introduction, until I read on the sidebar, and realized that there was a separate introduction. However, I loved the display of this storybook. The sea view background really ties the story together, and makes for a nice scenic view. Reference to the Finding Nemo movie never got old, and kept the story humorous.

The Story About a Bachelor Named Johnny

Authors Notes:
Going through The Nursery Rhyme Book, I found a song called “Johnny Shall Wear a Bonnet”. From further research, I believe it was a song written long ago in England. The original song is posted below. It is about a boy named Johnny who is going to the fair with his parents. He gets fully ready and seems to be well put together. There is another person in the story who is familiar to Johnny and his family. The only problem is, the person is unsure if there is love between Johnny and them self.  I put a modern day twist to this song and decided that Johnny would be some what of a “Bachelor”. He would go on several dates and pick who he wanted to see again…. Although he did find someone special, he receives an ironic end.

Johnny shall have a new bonnet,
And Johnny shall go to the fair,
And Johnny shall have a new ribbon
To tie up his bonny brown hair.

And why may not I love Johnny?
And why may not Johnny love me?
And why may not I love Johnny?
As well as another body?

And here's a leg for a stocking,
And here is a foot for a shoe,
And he has a kiss for his daddy,
And two for his mammy, I trow.

And why may not I love Johnny?
And why may not Johnny love me?
And why may not I love Johnny
As well as another body?

There once was a man named Johnny. He had once been married. He had a divorce, and was ready to get back on the horse, and find his new honey. Johnny asked a few of his friends if they knew of any single woman looking for potential relationships. A week went by and Johnny was informed that there were ten women, who would go on a date with him. He became so excited that he went out and bought ten different suits, one for each one of his dates. After two weeks Johnny had gone on all ten dates. He then sat at home, and began to think of who he would like to ask out on another date. He made a list describing each woman so he wouldn’t become further confused.

Date 1: Emma is three years older than me.
Date 2: Tiffany only cares about materialistic things.
Date 3: Regan is into sports, but smokes everyday.
Date 4: Sarah can only speak French. (awkward because
            I can’t speak French)
Date 5: Olivia is taller than me, even without heels.
Date 6: Penny can only talk in acronyms.
Date 7: Julia…She had the best smile, and continued a
            good conversation.
Date 8: Yasmin is still hung over her ex. (She clearly
tried to make her ex jealous)
Date 9: Victoria was nine years younger than me.
Date 10: Amanda likes to be in the gym for 18 hours of
              a day.

He then decided that Julia, his seventh date was the perfect match for him. He believed the date went well, and was confident he would receive another. Johnny then sent a gift to Julia’s house that contained a pair of earrings. He wrote a note which said “Here are some earrings, hope to receive a “ring” from you”. Time flew by, but no call ever came. He then sat and wondered why she never called. He then called Julia and asked if she received his gift. Julia told him that she did get the earrings, but thought Johnny was too corny for her. Johnny questioned if he would ever love anyone, or if anyone would ever love him.

The End.
